Family of crash victim is awarded $1.1 million
A Jefferson County jury Thursday awarded $1,125,000 to the family of a De Soto man killed when the car he was driving ran into the rear of an overturned cement truck on Highway 67 south of Interstate 55 near Festus.
The jury returned the verdict against Highway 53 Ready Mix Co. of Poplar Bluff following a four-day trial before Circuit Judge Gary P. Kramer in Hillsboro.
Homer Ketcherside Jr., 31, was killed on Sept. 18, 1999. The Ready Mix truck had been involved in an earlier accident in which another man was killed.
Ketcherside's parents, Janet and Homer Ketcherside Sr. of De Soto, sued the trucking company. Their attorney, Herman Praszkier, said the jury had returned a $1.3 million judgment but reduced the amount to $1,125,000 after subtracting $100,000 for a settlement reached last year with the estate of Lloyd Forbis who was involved in the first accident. Praszkier said the jury subtracted $75,000 more on the grounds that Ketcherside was at least partially responsible for the collision.
